ABSTRACT.- Cascon C.M., Mello M.F.V., Leite J.S. & Ferreira A.M.R. 2017. [Clinical, endoscopic and histopathological evaluation of dogs with inflammatory bowel disease.] E-mail: anatopatovet@vm.uff.br The aim of this study was to evaluate macro and microscopic gastrointestinal mucosa of domiciled dogs, with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms by endoscopy and histopathological evaluation, correlating clinical signs, macro and microscopy characteristics/aspects/changes of duodenal and gastric mucosa. Twenty dogs of different breeds were evaluated with with chronic characteristic signs of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), being 7 males and 13 females, with ages ranging from 1.7 to 15.8 years old. The study was prospective and cross-sectional, conducted in dogs treated at the Teaching Veterinary Medicine Hospital of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (HUVET-UFF) and private clinics in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Gastroduodenal mucosal samples were obtained by endoscopic biopsy and were processed by routine histological technique and stained with hematoxylin- eosin and Giemsa. The samples were submitted to histopathological analysis for the detection of spiral bacteria suggestive of Helicobacter spp. The rapid urease test was also performed. The clinical signs, the macro and microscopic findings were compared and correlated. In this study, we established a positive correlation between weight loss and the presence of erythema in the antrum, body and duodenum as well as correlation between change in appetite and the presence of gastric inflammatory infiltrate and positivity in the urease test. This study demonstrated the importance of the observation of some clinical signs such as weight loss and appetite changes in the course of IBD. Thus, it is emphasized that dogs showing these clinical signs should have the IBD included in the differential diagnoses group avoiding thereby neglecting a disease that increasingly affects small animals.

RESUMO.- Cascon C.M., Mello M.F.V., Leite J.S. & Ferreira A.M.R. 2017. [Clinical, endoscopic and histopathological evaluation of dogs with inflammatory bowel disease.]

#2 - Genotoxicity assessment of fipronil (frontline plus®) in Canis familiaris, 37(3):257-260

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Ziliotto L., Luna S.P.L., Filho D.A.A., Resende L.O., Aun A.G. & Braz M.G. 2017. Genotoxicity assessment of fipronil (frontline plus®) in Canis familiaris. [Avaliação de genotoxicidade do fipronil (frontline plus®) in cães.] Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 37(3):257-260. Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Avenida. Prof. Mário Rubens Guimarães Montenegro s/n, Botucatu, SP 18618-687, Brazil. E-mail: mgbraz@hotmail.com Fipronil is a pesticide widely used for controlling fleas and ticks in domestic animals, and its short-term exposure can lead to serious effects on animals. However, the possible genotoxic effect of this compound has not been investigated in target animals. Based on the hypothesis that fipronil can induce genotoxicity, this study evaluated the effect of fipronil on DNA damage in peripheral blood cells. For that purpose, ten dogs of both sexes were used in the study. The product (6.7mg/kg) was applied on the dorsal neck region of each animal. Peripheral blood samples were collected immediately prior to application of the product, and at 3, 8 and 24 hours after the application. Samples were processed for comet assay. No statistically significant differences were found among the four time points. The current study suggests for the first time that a single exposure to this pesticide does not induce systemic genotoxic effect in dogs.

RESUMO.- Ziliotto L., Luna S.P.L., Filho D.A.A., Resende L.O., Aun A.G. & Braz M.G. 2017. Genotoxicity assessment of fipronil (frontline plus®) in Canis familiaris.

Abstract in English:

RESUMO.- Santana E. Jr M., Beserra P.S., Brito A.B., Miranda S.A., Nikolak E. & Domingues S.F.S. 2009. [Renal artery Triplex Doppler and the relationship between kidney ecobiometry with atlanto-coccyges distance (ACD) and height (H) in Canis familiaris.]

E-mail: shfarha@ufpa.br The aim of this paper was to establish the relation between the kidney ecobiometry with atlanto-coccyges distance (ACD) and height (H) in adult healthy dogs, to obtain normality parameters for assessment of renal size and volume, as well as establish reference values to evaluate kidney blood perfusion by the resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of main renal artery. The study was applied at 22 adult dogs, 11 males and 11 females. Previously, the DAC and H of all animals were measured. For ultrasonographic examination, the ultra-sound system HDI 4000 PHILIPS equipped with a multi-frequency microconvex transducer, Color Doppler and Spectral Doppler devices was used. The animals were placed into right or left lateral decubitus position, in agreement with the kidney to be assessed. The longitudinal (LD) and dorsoventral diameters (DVD) of kidney were measured in longitudinal plane, and the transverse diameter (TD) was determined in transversal section. The renal volume (V) was automatically calculated by the ultrasound software. With Triplex Doppler, the RI and PI of right and left main renal arteries were obtained. All data were represented in mean ± SEM. Linear regression analyses were performed with renal LD, DVD, TD and V as dependent variable, and ACD and H as independent variable. RI and PI were compared between right and left renal arteries with Student’s t-test. The LD, DVD, TD (cm) and V (ml) mean measurements for the left and right kidneys were: 5.24±0.27, 3.07±0.15, 3.07±0.9, 28.01±3.4 and 4.50±0.19, 2.88±0.14, 2.71±0.15, 21.27±2.6. All regression analyses were significant for the intercept and regression coefficient (P<0.01). There were statistical differences on RI and PI means between right and left renal arteries (P=0.001). The RI and PI means of left and right renal artery obtained were: 0.62±0.08 and 1.34±0.18; 0.70±0.06 and 1.62±0.13. The data obtained in the present paper can be used as parameters for evaluation of the renal size, volume and perfusion in adult dogs.

#5 - Morphological analysis of the corneal endothelium in eyes of dogs using specular microscopy, p.427-430

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Pigatto J.A.T., Cerva C., Freire C.D., Abib F.C., Bellini L.P., Barros P.S.M. & Laus J.L. 2008. Morphological analysis of the corneal endothelium in eyes of dogs using specular microscopy. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 28(9):427-430. Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Av. Bento Gonçalves 9090, Porto Alegre, RS 91540-000, Brazil. E-mail: pigatto@ufrgs.br Both healthy eyes of 10 six-year-old male and female mongrel dogs were studied. With a contact specular microscope the corneal endothelium was examined. Endothelial cells were analyzed in the central and peripheral cornea. Morphological analysis with regard to polymegathism and pleomorphism was performed. Three images of each region with at least 100 cells were obtained. The analysis showed that polygonal cells formed a mosaic-like pattern uniform in size and shape. The predominant number of cells was hexagonal. The polymegathism index was 0.22. The study demonstrates that the morphology of the normal corneal endothelial cells of dogs is similar to that found in the human cornea.
